Hi guys, today our class in SL 006 .Miss Zue teach us about ''The Introductory Paragraph'' which is the most important paragraph in essay. So,here are some information that we must know when writing the introductory paragraph for essay.

What is the purpose of the introductory paragraph?
1.to get reader's attention
2.Make a contract with the reader - what will be covered in this piece?

The part of the introductory paragraph:
The hook:designed to grab attention immediately & give indication about the essay's topic.
The transition:moves the reader from the hook to the driving force of the essay.
The thesis:make the contract with the reader about what to be discussed without a blatant announcement.

*Type of Hook:
 1.Personal examples
2. Quotations
3.Facts or statistics
4.Rhetorical questions
5.Current events
  6. Contrast to the thesis statement
7.Definition

      *Personal example:
#Provide strong, dramatic incident to use.Honesty in expressing thought & feelings will ring true the reader.you can make up personal experience, but makes sure it not sound credible.
     *Personal observation:
  # Different from personal example. An observation is something you saw happening

 *Quotation:
*content of quotation must be:
1.dramatic.
2.suprising.
  3. humorous.
   4.emotionally appealing.

#quote does not have to be from a famous person.
#quote must relvan to thesis statement.

   *Using facts or statistic:
     #must be starling & unusual.
    #must be from credible source.
     #Just use the TRUE facts.

  *Use rhetorical question:
#a statement that is formulated as a question but that is not supposed to be answered
#A question asked without expecting an answer but for the sake of emphasis or effect.

* Using current effect:
#Must be recent
#Must be important
#Should be make public like televisyen, radio and newspaper.

*Using contrast to the Thesis Statement:
#In direct contrast to the thesis statement.
#It's fun to prove an expert wrong.

* Using definition:
#a word, term, or concept in depth by providing a personal commentary on what the specific subject means.
#Most physical objects have a definition about which most people agree.
# However, abstract terms, such as love, pain, or patriotism, have different meanings for different individuals since such terms play on people’s feelings more than their physical senses.
